What are your stencils made of? Our stencils are made of 10 mil mylar plastic and are laser cut in the USA.
What is the best paint to use to stencil on my walls? Latex wall paint in a flat or eggshell finish is recommended. A DIY thickening method is to allow the paint to sit with the lid off in a well-ventilated area. Stir the paint every hour and check its consistency. The water content will gradually evaporate, thickening the paint. When the paint is slightly thicker it leads to slightly less bleeding. Another good alternative is chalk paint. There are fewer color options but chalk paint works well.
How much paint do I need to stencil? You will be amazed how little paint will need to stencil a wall. A sample size can of 8oz, can do an entire wall unless it is a large wall. You can always get more paint if needed, but it is best to start with less to avoid waste.
If my walls are textured, can I still stencil on them? Our stencils are very detailed, so I am afraid that you can’t get a crisp line and you won’t be happy with the result.
How do I clean my stencil? A latex paint remover will work. I would recommend Motsenbocker’s Lift Off. Spray the product on both sides of your stencil, let sit for a few minutes, scrub with a stiff-bristled scrub brush and then rinse with warm water. If the paint is being stubborn, you can cover the stencil in plastic, or use the plastic bag that came with your stencil, and let it sit for a few hours.
How do I fix any stencil bleeding? Minimal bleeding is normal in stenciling but if the imperfections bother you, you can do touch ups with a small paintbrush, using the paint color of your wall.
What do I need to do to enter the monthly before and after competition? All submissions must be emailed to diana@blacksheepstencils with one before and one after photo in a SQUARE format (not a portrait or landscape).
All submissions must be submitted by the end of each month and the winner will be announced the first week of the following month. If you would prefer to show your stenciled masterpieces but remain anonymous that is perfectly okay.
